Screen art can be any colour, any aspect ratio, any density of detail. A printed pad cannot. It is a fixed physical rectangle, roughly 9:4 on a wide desk mat, with a 6-8mm stitched border eating the edges and a permanent hand covering part of the surface in use. None of that is visible when you're staring at a square generation on a laptop screen, which is exactly why so many first attempts look fine on-screen and disappointing once printed.

The five-slot prompt formula
Every workable mousepad prompt fills five slots. Skip one and the model fills it in for you — rarely the way you wanted.
- Subject — what is literally in frame, doing what.
- Style — the rendering language: cel-shaded anime, oil painting, risograph, flat vector, ink-wash.
- Composition — where things sit, described in fractions of the frame, not vague words like "off-centre."
- Palette — two or three named colours, never "colourful."
- Light — direction and quality, not "nice lighting."

Because this artwork becomes a physical object, two more decisions belong in the prompt:
- Calm-zone instruction — where your mouse hand will rest should stay visually quiet: "lower-right area is a plain soft gradient with no detail."
- Exclusion clause — one short line, not a list: "no text, no borders."

Fill it in:

That is a complete, unambiguous instruction. Nothing in it is left for the model to guess.
Constraint 1 — Aspect ratio is not negotiable
A prompt written for a square image and then generated at 9:4 will stretch or crop badly. Think horizontally from the first sentence: a subject at one end, a journey or gradient across the middle, atmosphere at the other end. Say it directly — "extreme panoramic composition, subject on the far right, empty space sweeping left" — rather than describing a self-contained square scene and hoping it reflows.
Constraint 2 — The stitch line eats the edges
Roughly 6-8mm around the perimeter of a stitched pad disappears into the seam. Anything meaningful there is gone.
- Never prompt full-bleed borders, frames, or edge-to-edge text.
- Keep signatures, marks and small details well inside the frame.
- If you want a framed look, ask for an inset frame with real margin: "thin inset border with generous margin," not "framed edge to edge."
Constraint 3 — Ergonomics beat aesthetics
Your mouse hand covers a fixed region of the pad for as long as you use it. Detail placed there is detail you paid for and will never see — and on a wide XL/XXL/XXXL pad, that region is large. Say it explicitly: "lower-right area is a plain soft gradient with no detail." This is the single most product-specific skill in this whole discipline, and almost nobody outside people who actually make physical prints does it by instinct.
Constraint 4 — The gamut is smaller than your monitor
Dye-sublimation on polyester cannot hit the electric cyans, pure blacks and fluorescent greens a backlit screen shows you. Naming three specific colours instead of asking for "vibrant" or "colourful" does two things at once: it gives the model a clear target, and it keeps you inside colours that survive the print. "Rich but restrained colour, deep tones rather than fluorescent" is a better instruction than any amount of "vibrant, eye-catching, colourful."
Constraint 5 — Resolution has a physical floor
Physical size sets a hard pixel requirement. At a workable 150 DPI:

Nine techniques for tighter control
Beyond the five-slot formula, these techniques consistently sharpen results.
1. Budget your negative space out loud
Say it numerically: "left two thirds empty atmosphere," "bottom half a plain gradient." Models respect explicit spatial fractions far more reliably than the word "minimal," which they will interpret loosely.
2. Limit the palette to three named colours
"Colourful" produces mud — an average of every hue, which is visually nothing. Three named colours produce a design, and naming them keeps you inside the printable gamut almost by accident.
3. Specify light direction and quality
"Low sun from the left, long soft shadows" is a physical instruction the model can act on. "Nice lighting" is not a instruction at all — it is a wish. Light direction is what makes a generated image feel like one coherent scene rather than assembled pieces.
4. Anchor style to a medium, not an artist
Say "risograph print with visible ink misregistration," "oil on canvas with heavy impasto," "flat vector with two-tone shading." Medium anchors are more controllable than artist names and sidestep style-imitation problems entirely.
5. Describe the camera
Unusual framing escapes the generic centred composition almost automatically: "extreme wide, subject small in frame," "top-down flat lay," "macro, subject filling the left edge." Framing language does more work here than almost any adjective.
6. Say what you don't want — once
One short exclusion clause helps: "no text, no borders, no visible characters' faces." A long list of exclusions starts hurting, because naming a concept — even to reject it — increases its influence on the output.
7. Narrow iteratively instead of rewriting

8. Match complexity to the product
A 350mm square pad cannot hold a sprawling battle scene — at that size it reads as noise. Small canvases want one strong subject. Large mats can carry layered scenes with foreground, mid-ground and background because there is physical room to resolve them.
9. Describe the goal, not the software feature
You are not asking for a layer mask or a gradient tool. You are asking for a result: "soft warm gradient behind the subject," not "add a gradient layer at 40% opacity."
