AI image refinement is a targeted edit to your current design, not a fresh roll of the dice. Instead of regenerating from scratch and losing what already worked, you describe the one thing to change and the system applies it while preserving everything else. Getting good at phrasing that request is the single biggest skill difference between a design that takes two iterations and one that takes twenty.
Regeneration vs refinement
These are two different operations and confusing them wastes the most time in the studio.
Regeneration discards the current image and produces a new one from the prompt. Every part of the design is back in play, including the composition and colours you already liked.
Refinement takes your current image as the starting point and applies a described change on top of it. Anything you didn't mention is meant to hold steady.
The rule that saves the most iterations: regenerate when the underlying concept is wrong, refine when the concept is right but the execution needs adjusting. If you like the samurai-on-a-third composition but the sky is the wrong colour, that's a refinement. If you've decided you want a dragon instead of a samurai, that's a regeneration.
What a refinement request actually does
- The current design is read as a brief — subject, style, palette, composition, lighting, notable elements.

Contrast and lighting

Character or subject placement

How many iterations you actually need
Most well-scoped designs land in three to six focused passes: one to fix composition or placement, one or two for colour and contrast, and one final pass to calm the mouse zone or tighten margins near the stitched edge. Designs that stall past ten or twelve passes are usually a sign the underlying concept needs to change, not the eleventh refinement — at that point, regenerating with a clearer prompt is faster than continuing to patch.

When to start over instead of refining
Refinement struggles with a few specific categories: swapping a character entirely, precise geometric symmetry, changing one face while keeping everything else pixel-identical, and any request bundling five or more instructions at once.
